Why We Should Eat More Chocolate (According to a Neuroscientist!)
March 23, 2021
What do you think of when you hear the term “nutritious food”? Personally, my mind immediately goes to items like carrots, apples, or anything green.
One of the simplest ways to support our brain and heart health is to eat nutrient-dense foods. I’m sure you’ve heard this time and time again. However, not all of these foods are fruits and veggies!
Kristen Willeumier, a neuroscientist and neurodegenerative disease researcher, says that dark chocolate is one of the most functional foods we can add to our diet. Although I’m sure everyone reading this right now already considers chocolate as a diet staple.
Dark chocolate contains a lot of antioxidants which provides anti-inflammatory effects in both our brain and our body. Chocolate may also reduce the risk of developing cognitive decline! This is because the flavonoids in dark chocolate can trigger chemical reactions in the brain that help contribute to the growth of new cells.
According to Willeumier, this brain cell growth specifically occurs in the hippocampus. This area of the brain is responsible for learning and memory.
Daily consumption of dark chocolate also helps release nitric oxide which increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood flow, resulting in lowered blood pressure!
I knew chocolate was good for the soul, but who knew it was so good for our bodies too. It is important to remember, though, that this only applies to dark chocolate!
Next time you’re in the grocery store, make sure to not only fill your cart with nutritious fruits and vegetables, but with loads of dark chocolate as well! If you get any weird looks, just tell them that you’re trying to eat healthier. 😉
