What Do Theo Chocolates and Jane Goodall Have In Common?
According to the Theo Chocolates website, "The partnership between Theo and Jane Goodall is inspired by 'Cocoa Practices,' a ground breaking Theo Chocolate initiative that brings together small scale cocoa farmers, larger producers, and non-governmental organizations from the world's cocoa producing regions."
Jane Goodall is a United Nations Messenger of Peace. She puts her stamp of approval, "Good For All" seal , on products she feels reflects her personal commitment to supporting the environment, and high quality, ethically produced products from the developing world.
Good cocoa practices are designed to sustain and conserve the natural resources in the tropical rainforest eco-systems. These healthy eco-systems maintain good growing conditions for cacao crops, keep wildlife and the environment in proper balance, and provide farmers their livelihoods and their homes.
Two new Theo chocolate bars now carry Jane's seal; Theo's 45% Milk Chocolate and 70% Dark Chocolate.
I recently had the pleasure of tasting the 45% milk chocolate bar. The 45% represents the amount of cocoa solids and consequently makes the milk chocolate darker in color than most milk chocolates. It is part of a growing trend of "Dark Milks." The high percentage of chocolate also provides a lovely nutty, chocolaty punch that blends well with the dairy notes. The milky and buttery flavors are more subdued, but they are nicely balanced among notes of chocolate and sweet.
The proceeds from the sale of the Jane Goodall chocolate bars benefit cocoa farmers, and directly contribute to the Jane Goodall Institute's efforts to save chimpanzees and the rainforest.
