Mexican Hot Chocolate

Spicy Mexican Hot Chocolate Recipe

My love for hot chocolates continues and today we are going to turn it up a notch. Who doesn’t love a good cup of hot chocolate, right? I especially crave for one with a thick consistency, and something that is not too sweet, and maybe with a little spicy kick?

We’ve talked about the traditional hot chocolate recipe in the Philippines where coconut milk and Tablea are mixed together for the ultimate hot cocoa goodness. Tablea is a Filipino term which is 100% pure cocoa that has been grounded to form small balls.

Today we are making yet another variation to the usual hot chocolate drink! It’s a Mexican hot chocolate recipe where they use cacao nibs to thicken that chocolatey flavor and cinnamon to spice it up. Speaking of spice, you can also add chili powder for a spicy kick.

For this recipe, we are using bittersweet chocolate instead of cacao nibs, but if you have the nibs or unsweetened cocoa powder you can use that too. Using chocolate bar will make your drink thicker, which is what I prefer, so best to keep that in mind.

As for the toppings, you can of course add whatever you prefer… It can be chocolate shavings, marshmallows, whipped cream, or chocolate syrup, or a combination of all! Now, let’s move on to the recipe, shall we?

Spicy Mexican Hot Chocolate Recipe

What you need:

  • ½ cup good quality bittersweet or dark chocolate, chopped
  • 2 cups milk of your choice
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoon brown sugar or coconut sugar (add more depending on taste)
  • Pinch of cayenne or chili powder
  • Toppings: whipped cream, marshmallows, cinnamon powder, chocolate shavings

What to do:

In a medium pot over medium heat, combine all ingredients except chocolate, and bring to a simmer.

Lower the heat a little, and stir occasionally for about 10 more minutes.

Stir in the chocolate until fully melted. Check if sweetness and spice are already enough.

Pour into large mugs and garnish with whipped cream or marshmallows. Serve and enjoy!

For extra oomph, sprinkle your favorite vegan chocolate shavings on top or add 2 tablespoons of your favorite brandy to make it the perfect adult drink.

That was easy, huh? You can always add ice cubes to make it a summer drink!
