Southern Grove Trail Mix with Rainforest Alliance Certified™ Cocoa
December 28, 2015
You have to be cautious when choosing a trail mix that contains chocolate. Sometimes the chocolate pieces are “chocolatey” pieces -- meaning they are sugar-coated chocolate-flavored confectionery candies. Yuk.
Many times the chocolate is an ordinary chocolate chip or morsel. That’s okay, but other dried fruits can overwhelm the chocolate, and your chocolate taste experience is quite subdued.
I try to find trail mix with a high-cacao-percentage chocolate so that the chocolate flavor stands out amongst the fruit and nuts. If the label doesn’t indicate the cacao percent, then I look for a chocolate blend with dried berries because they are not as super sweet as pineapple or mango or papaya.
This particular Southern Grove Trail Mix, which I picked up at Aldi, has a blend I really like. It contains dried cranberries, dark chocolate drops, cashews, pepitas, banana chips, and dried blueberries.
The chocolate drops have rich cocoa notes that pop out with every bite, revealing an earthy and slightly vanilla finish. And, as a bonus, they are organic and Rainforest Alliance™ Certified.
What does “Rainforest Alliance Certified™” mean?
Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal can be spotted on a variety of products including coffee, chocolate, tea, fruit, or flowers.
These products contain ingredients sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms. The cacao farms are managed with strict environmental and socio-economical guidelines to conserve the rainforest, protect workers, and strive for long-term crop sustainability.
