Simple Truth Organic Dark Chocolate Bars
July 1, 2019
Organic chocolate continues to improve and trend. Over the last couple years I’ve seen improvements in chocolate flavor development, unique and/or exotic flavor offerings, price (much more affordable!), availability, and brands. Simple Truth chocolate bars are part of the Kroger Co. store brand line of organic chocolate.
The two Simple Truth bars I’m sharing with you today are: Cocount Dark Chocolate and Marcona Almond Dark Chocolate
Coconut Dark Chocolate (54% cocoa mass)
The aroma is buttery and nutty. The color is light for a dark chocolate, and almost immediately your brain thinks “a dark milk chocolate?” Well, almost.
In addition to coconut flakes, this bar contains coconut milk powder so there’s certainly a similarity in flavor and texture with a milk chocolate.
There are creamy, buttery flavors, mixed with soft nutty and vanilla notes. The coconut flake is finely grated and the chocolate melts quickly in the mouth. The whole experience is very luxurious.
Marcona Almond Dark Chocolate (73% cocoa mass)
The aroma is chocolatey and nutty with a hint of spice. The chocolate is rich and the chocolatey flavor evenly dispersed throughout the chewing and tasting.
The almonds are slightly sweet with a soft texture, and eating them reminds me of the flavor and texture of the frothy layer of steamed milk on a hot latte.
By the way, you might be wondering, what is a “Marcona Almond?” Marcona Almonds come from Spain and are more of a “gourmet” almond than the more commonly found almonds we see from California. The texture is softer (more similar to a macadamia nut), and their shape is more round and fleshy.
Nutritionally there isn’t much difference between the California variety and the Marcona. However, there’s a pronounced difference in flavor. A Marcona almond is considerably sweeter and moister. There’s more of a buttery flavor too.
The CUO Chocolate and Wine Tasting Guide will show you how to pair chocolate and wine for amazing experiences. It's hot outside, but you're in the air conditioning sharing the love of chocolate with a small or large group of friends! Click here.
