Salba Chia – Chocolate Covered Chia Seeds

I remember commercials from my childhood for “Chia Pet”. And it is because of this memory that I had a hard time thinking of chia as an edible food.

Chia seeds as an ingredient is all the rage these days. Sprinkle them on yogurt. Make your own chia seed pudding. You can even find them in pre-packaged items like cereal, granola bars, applesauce, candy bars, and crackers. Now there’s another twist – dark chocolate coated chia seeds.

Individually Coated Chia Seeds!

Salba Chia makes a 62% dark chocolate covered non-GMO chia seed. I’ve added them to my granola with almond milk. They add a little chocolatey flavor to my breakfast without making it taste too sweet. Plus the almond milk turns into chocolate milk!

Eating them by the handful is fun, although a bit tricky since they are so tiny they tend to fall out between the cracks of your fingers as you’re throwing them into your mouth! But if you can get them all in successfully, they create a delightfully crunchy combination of chocolatey and nutty flavors.

Another thing I’ve tried, is adding them to my “Overnight Oats” recipes. And, as I type this, I’m snacking on a bowl of vanilla yogurt topped with blackberries and dark chocolate chia seeds. So good!

Chia seeds are grown and harvested in dessert like climates of Mexico and South America. Chia seeds offer many health benefits from their omega-3 fatty acids, protein, fiber, and antioxidants.

According to the Salba dark chocolate chia package, two tablespoons contain 4 g of protein and 5g dietary fiber. Our bodies can digest whole chia seeds easily, unlike flax seeds. When chia seeds are allowed to soak, they turn into a gelatin-like substance that can be used in recipes to replace eggs as the binding ingredient.

Before I eat the entire bag, I’m going to make one of the recipes from the Salba website. Doesn’t “Dark Chocolate Salba Chia Pumpkin Muffins” sound pretty good right about now?!

My first thought when I saw this was the same as yours – Chia Pet! Then I thought of adding to the oatmeal. Great minds. Where did you buy this? I can’t find it online anywhere.
