Probiotic Chocolate Biscuits
November 13, 2012
Truth be told, I am a chocolate addict just like all the other millions of people in the world. I could finish a whole bar of milk chocolate all to myself or consume a liter of chocolate drink in one sitting.
But at the back of this chocolate obsession attitude of mine is the thought of making the most out of everything while I still can. I may be young and active now. But who know what follows five, ten, or twenty years from now?
My health could deteriorate. Perhaps I will be diagnosed with illnesses that will hold me back from eating whatever I want. Aging entails wisdom. But as much as we want to deny it, aging also comes with letting go of our youthful vices, one of which could be chocolates. I shudder at the thought.
But I recently stumbled upon a pot of gold! Well, not literally, but please get my point. Okay. A study was conducted to prove that chocolate biscuits containing probiotics help in preventing constipation and diarrhea among the elderly.
The study was conducted by dividing the participants into two groups. One group was instructed to eat probiotic chocolate biscuits once a day for a span of 30 days while the other group was tasked to eat a placebo.
The biscuits used were composed of Bifidobacterium longum (Bar33) and Lactobacilus helveticus (Bar13) which were trusted to have immune regulative properties that served as a counter action against age related digestion problems.
A report from The Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging authored by Rampelli et al, explained that “Our data demonstrated that one month consumption of probiotics-containing biscuit was effective in redressing some of the age-related dysbioses of the intestinal microbiota.” The study added, “In particular, the probiotic treatment reverted age-related increase of the opportunistic pathogens.”
Furthermore, the authors continued by saying that future research can be done in order to evaluate the effects of the biscuits towards the overall immune capacity of an elderly person because they believe that there is still more to it.
I may have said a lot already, but having chocolates and aging in one sentence that has a positive thought, is more than enough to make me happy. This gave me a reason to not fear getting old. So take heart, whether you are old now, or just on your way, you can still have a bite of chocolate anytime you want.
