Make Your Own Hot Chocolate Bombs

Easily upgrade your hot chocolate experience using chocolate bombs or hot cocoa bombs. These are fun little chocolate spheres with more chocolate bits and marshmallows inside, that when added to a cup of steaming milk, will melt and combine. Here’s more about these yummy treats.

Chocolate bombs are not only an addictive extra treat to your drinks, they are also a fun party trick. You can choose different ingredients to put inside the sphere and surprise guests with different combinations. You can also customize your toppings or add white to chocolate to the mix to create a marble-colored chocolate bomb. Sounds cool and delicious!

These yummy spheres can also be gifted to friends and families on special occasions. Put them in muffin liners and decorative boxes, and that’s it!

Hot Chocolate Bombs Recipe

What you need:

  • Silicone molds
  • Silicone pastry brush
  • 30oz chocolate melting wafer or high-quality dark chocolate bar
  • 1 cup high-quality cocoa powder or your preferred hot chocolate mix
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • Toppings: melted white chocolate, sprinkles, chocolate chips, powdered sugar, mini brownies

What to do:

Melt your melting wafer according to the packaging directions. If using chocolate bar, chop into tiny slivers and melt using your microwave or double-broiler.

Then, clean and dry your silicone molds. Use a silicone pastry brush, or the back of a spoon, to apply the melted chocolate to the molds. Set aside or place in the refrigerator to harden for at least 5 minutes. After that, apply a second coat of melted chocolate and put back to completely harden.

When the chocolate spheres have set, gently release them from the mold. Do not hold them long enough in your hands because they will melt. If you think they are starting to soften and melt, put them back in the fridge.

If your spheres have rough edges, smooth them out by melting the edges gently in a warm plate or a skillet. Make sure the pan is not too hot that it will melt the whole sphere, and do not push too hard in the middle to avoid collapsing.

Then, start filling the other half of the spheres with your chosen treats. Put 2 tablespoon of cocoa powder or your cocoa mix, add mini marshmallows, mini chocolate bars or even mini brownies.

Warm the edge of the other half of the sphere and gently fuse them together to seal. And voila! Your chocolate bomb is complete!

That was easy, huh? And it would make a great gift too if you want to send someone some chocolate bombs.

Don’t forget to add your favorite toppings! Drizzle with melted white or dark chocolate, add sprinkles, powdered sugar, more cocoa powder, chocolate chips, or mini mushrooms. It’s totally up to you!

And that’s it! Store them in the fridge using an airtight container for up to 2 months. For extra oomph, add a shot of whiskey or your favorite booze for that extra kick! 😉
