Lindt 90% Supreme Dark Review

I’m sure there are many who might look at a chocolate bar label with 90% cacao and cringe. That’s almost like eating unsweetened baking chocolate! One would have to be out of their mind to eat such a thing, right?

On the other hand, if you’re into super dark chocolate like me, you look at that label and smile. 90% has some serious chocolate impact to inflict!

Who Wants That Much Cacao?

Lindt 90% Supreme DarkSo, who would be out of their minds to eat such strong chocolate with so little sweetness?

Those with an appreciation for the naturally occurring, subtle, and complex flavors that only chocolate unimpeded by sugar can unleash.

And, for those who appreciate a large dose of antioxidants and good health.

To Your Health!

Speaking of antioxidants, I found some interesting research recently about the relationship between milk and chocolate.

According to a report out of Italy's National Institute for Food and Nutrition Research in Rome, dark chocolate – but not milk chocolate or dark chocolate eaten with milk – delivers powerful antioxidants that gobble up free radicals that contribute to aging, heart disease, and other health issues.

The results of this research suggests that milk may interfere with the absorption of antioxidants from chocolate and could even cancel out the health benefits from eating sensible amounts of dark chocolate.

Another article I found talks about the relationship between chocolate and blood pressure; darker is better! The more cacao in a chocolate bar, the more phenol compounds to combat high blood pressure.

My Review of Lindt 90% Supreme Dark

Now back to the Lindt 90% supreme dark chocolate bar. The chocolate is melt in your mouth smooth and creamy.

There’s a lot more cocoa butter in a 90% bar compared to a more common percentage like 70%. The more cocoa butter, the faster melt and the creamier the mouth-feel.

Once the 90% has melted a little in the mouth, the many flavors of red fruit, nutty notes, as well as cinnamon, leather and wood, all come to you at once.

But the wonderful thing about this high percentage is that you can easily pick out the flavors that are swirling around in your mouth. This is due, in part, because of the lack of sugar and other ingredients that would otherwise distract you from picking out the flavor nuances.

You’ll find that identifying complex flavors is more difficult to do with a lower percentage dark chocolate, and certainly more difficult with a milk chocolate.

Another flavor you can pick up on, that is nicely blended with the strong chocolatey notes, is the vanilla.

Lindt uses Bourbon vanilla beans for the 90% supreme dark. Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla is a superior vanilla; rich, dark, and creamy with a potent sweet and buttery aroma.

I believe using this particular vanilla tones down any bitterness that a high percentage cacao, low sugar chocolate formula would have.

Put aside your skepticism at the thought of enjoying a 90% chocolate. Open your mind and just do it! If you do, you will taste the true essence of chocolate.

Recently Consumer Labs tested chocolate for heavy metal toxicity. Unfortunately Lindt 90% is over the limit for the heavy metal, cadmium. Do your research before buying Lindt products. Too bad as I ate Lindt regularly for decades and have quit buying it.

I love love love the Lindt 90% chocolate dark flavor. This bar is amazing. Most people are asking me how do you eat that?! It’s so bitter. Not for me.

Plus sides are the antioxidants, and the fiber! 5 g of fiber per serving. Also the whole bar has only 7.5 g of sugar! That’s less than 1/3 the sugar in a Hershey’s bar of milk chocolate!

This bar uses Dutch process so that the chocolate is more a palatable. To me it just works wonders.

    A miracle food overall.
