Edible Music: Chocolate Record
July 1, 2011
OK, this is interesting... Ben Milne, a baker from Fife, Scotland, has developed what is believed to be the first chocolate record that can actually be played on a record player. Wow!
The idea first came up when Ben was collaborating with his friends from the Edinburgh-based band "Found." He decided to try making their latest single, Anti-Climb Paint, out of chocolate.
At first he just poured some chocolate onto the single, peeled it off, and attempted to play the grooves left in the chocolate. But he soon realized that this actually recorded the reverse of the song.
So he tried making a mold of the single and then pouring chocolate on the mold. While this oriented the tracks properly, the copy of a copy didn't produce very good results.
Finally, with the record company interested in the publicity they provided Ben with one of the negative metal templates that is used to press the vinyl disks.
Ben poured the chocolate on the template, let it harden, peeled it off, and it worked! He got a 7-inch disk of the music in chocolate. It can be played on any record player.
Ben slaps an icing sugar label on the record and slides it into a rice paper sleeve, keeping the entire product edible.
The record can be played about 10 times before it has worn down too much to play recognizable music. Of course that assumes you still have a record player on which to play it. But once it's worn down, then go ahead and eat it. It's still good chocolate.
With only 50 chocolate records being made, I think the biggest challenge will be to get one in the first place.

I really enjoyed this article! What a cool idea, I’ve always liked to play with my food. Wonder how much one of these records cost?
Wow. That’s amazing. It would make a really good novelty gift for the chocolate/music lover. Is there any link to where these can be bought? I feel like it’s a pretty clever idea, 50 is not enough!
