Dark Chocolate Banana Chips
September 19, 2017
Want to put yourself into a better mood? I think by now most of us have heard that chocolate is a great mood enhancer. For years, it’s been known that chocolate does more than just taste good, it can actually do the body good.
Cocoa boosts serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter responsible for maintaining a balanced mood and feeling of well-being. It stimulates the happy-making parts of your brain!
Did you know that bananas contain dopamine? Dopamine is neurotransmitter that ‘rewards’ the brain for positive behaviors. It’s a great mood booster just like chocolate.
Now, imagine bananas and chocolate together. Certainly that’s a common pairing, and many people like the taste of chocolate and bananas at the same time. But now imagine your mood – it could get super charged! Okay, maybe that’s overstating it a bit, but there’s plenty of research to suggest that chocolate and bananas are more than a tasty combination.
Today I’m eating Roundy’s brand Simply Organic Dark Chocolate Banana Chips.
Banana chips are a great snack by themselves, and covered in 54% dark chocolate makes them even better (in my humble opinion).
They are crunchy, nutty and chocolatey. The chocolate coating is soft, smooth, fruity and earthy. The banana chips are mostly nutty tasting and low on banana flavor.
I find this is typical of banana chips, and covered in chocolate makes the banana flavor even more remote. The finish is all chocolate, with just a hint of vanilla.
I enjoy eating banana chips - without the chocolate coating- during a long bike ride. They give me a boost of energy to keep me going. Banana chips contain fiber, iron and potassium.
A word of caution; while banana chips may seem healthy, there are some nutritional drawbacks. They often contain large amounts of fat (from deep frying) and sugar. And, while adding a coating of dark chocolate may also seem healthy, you’ve added more sugar to the total.
The good news about this snack is that just a few chips really satisfy the taste buds. That makes me happy!
