Chocolate Before Doomsday
June 26, 2012
I know all of us have managed to watch at least a couple of movies whose plot is focused on alien invasion, world destruction, or whatever a screenwriter could think of as long as it is related to ending all the life on this planet. This trend became more elevated with the infamous doomsday thing in the year 2012. I’m not sure if people are just plain masochists thinking about losing their souls or are really curious on whether this suspicion is true and if so, when is it exactly going to happen.
Of course dying is an unpleasant thing most especially if you are unprepared for it. So if it is my turn to go, I think it would be helpful if I knew about it ahead of time. That is not for me to stop it because I am no superhero or God, but the awareness of it will somehow make sense.
Since I already mentioned films, here is an addition to the already many movies we’ve seen but still has that factor that tickles our fancy. It stars Keira Knightley and Steve Carell in a dark comedy film entitled "Seeking a Friend For the End of the World". When asked about how she would spend her last day, she replied with "We would eat a lot of cake! Lots of cake." I actually envy her on that. She thought of one thing she would do. Because, as for me, I think the world would have already ended even before I could utter a few sentences. Blame my indecision! But that’s actually a divine idea.
However, on the lighter side of this already gloomy issue, they say that every end is just the beginning of something new. Knightley even added, "Given that it is about the end of the world, which is obviously a dark and depressing subject matter, it is incredibly positive, and that is what amazed me when I first read the script -- how life-affirming it is, and it's really about what is important in life."
And I say amen to that. Just because something is about to end does not mean everything is going to waste. I for one can look back on the life I lived, be thankful and contented. We'll never know, the new beginning might just be scheduled on January 2013. Waiting for a month or so would not be too shabby then. And while at it, why not drown myself in chocolate? I bet Keira Knightley's not the only one with such bright idea!
