Bavarian Spice Chocolate Cake Recipe for German Unity Day

The Day of German Unity (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) is officially celebrated on October 3rd, and has been a German national holiday since 1990, when the reunification of East and West Germany was formally completed.

To help celebrate from afar, test out this Bavarian spiced chocolate cake recipe on family and friends. After all, Germany is responsible for many of the things we enjoy here in the U.S. - Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, BMW, Siemens, Jägermeister, Hugo Boss, and the list goes on.

Why Celebrated on October 3?

Prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, East Germans recognized the founding of the German Democratic Republic in 1949, the Tag der Republik, as their national holiday on October 7th.

In West Germany, it was June 17th that was observed as a national holiday. The choice of October 3rd for Germany’s new national holiday was carefully considered.

Unfortunately, the date the wall actually came down, on November 9th, 1989, coincided with Kristallnacht (night of broken glass), which was the day in 1938 of an infamous anti-Jewish pogrom.

Otherwise, November 9th would likely have been chosen as the new date for Germany’s national holiday. Thus, the day the German reunification treaty took effect was chosen instead. This document is called the Einigungsvertrag (German Unity Treaty).

Of course, here in the U.S. we celebrate July 4th as our Independence Day, even though the Declaration was approved on July 2nd, and wasn’t signed until August 2nd! So, what’s really in a date anyway?

To quote Shakespeare - "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Take a moment this October 3rd to appreciate how far Germany has come since the fall of the Berlin Wall. And celebrate with cake. 🙂

Bavarian Spice Chocolate Cake

  • 1 Devil's Food cake mix
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup cold mashed potatoes
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 eggs

Glaze:

  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour a 12-cup fluted tube pan. In large bowl, blend cake mix, cinnamon, nutmeg, potatoes, butter, water, and eggs until moistened. Beat 2 minutes at highest speed. Pour into prepared pan. Bake at 350° for 40-50 minutes. Cool upright in pan 25 minutes; invert onto serving plate. Cool completely.

In small saucepan, blend chocolate chips, 1 tablespoon butter and milk over low heat until chocolate melts, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; stir in powdered sugar until smooth. (If needed, add a few more drops of milk for desired consistency.) Spoon over top of cake, allowing some to run down the sides. Garnish as desired.

Enjoy! 🙂
