Alter Eco DARK BLACKOUT
November 21, 2016
Alter Eco’s Dark Blackout is a single source Ecuadorian, 85% cacao masterpiece of chocolate.
Everything they say about this chocolate bar on the wrapper and on their website is absolutely true. When they say it’s deeply fruity and intense, it is.
85 percent of any origin chocolate is going to be powerful, but this bar goes the extra mile.
Without being bitter, the deep fruit, made mostly of cherry and blueberry flavor notes, is tremendously refined and smooth. I can also taste soft nutty and earthy notes along with a hint of coffee and vanilla.
I could eat this chocolate all day long.
A Brief Back Story
Alter Eco’s Ecuadorian cocoa beans come from the Fortaleza Cooperative in Calceta, Ecuador.
This cooperative was founded in 2005, and, according to the related page on the Fair Trade USA website, “They have been working together since 2005 to improve their farming techniques in order to improve quality and expand market opportunities. The Fair Trade premium has enabled the cooperative to invest in infrastructure, processing equipment and pre-harvest financing for members.”
What does that mean to me? Well, the way I see it, if I actually eat Dark Blackout all day long, I’ll really make a big difference to farmers in Ecuador. And to my waistline. But that’s a different problem, which I could, perhaps, solve with exercise!
