Alcohol-flavored Chocolate Readily Available to Children

Imagine these little children walk up into a supermarket and buy alcohol-flavored chocolates all in their gloriously bright colors side by side with other candies. Supermarkets, candy manufacturers and alcohol distillers are the ones who are getting the most out of this. It’s such a bummer that there are countries that have no laws that ban the sale and marketing of alcohol-flavored chocolates, lollipops and other snacks to little children.

There was a specific time when rum and vodka-flavored chocolates were readily available in only exclusive outlets in Nairobi, but now they are widely available in leading mass distribution retail outlets in the capital.

There was even this particular writer (a minor) who accidentally came across alcohol-flavored chocolates at a party in which certain young single women were blathering about wines and candy. Much to the writer’s surprise, these alcoholic-flavored chocolates have been around for quite a stretch of time already.

“They are very trendy, especially with youthful college and university girls but are also a favorite with my two school-going children,” Diana, one of the socialites, said. The writer was even suggested to go visit visit supermarkets in Westlands, a popular haven for upmarket social trends, if he wanted to try it on for size.

The Australian Medical Association issued a 60-page report protesting that the alcohol industry was grooming little children to drink by making these alcohol-flavored chocolates and other snacks widely and readily available.

“By flavoring sweet or salty foods that are popular with children, alcohol companies are introducing young consumers to their brand at an early age, encouraging them to develop familiarity with, and loyalty to, their product,’’ said the report.

The report did not only zero in on chocolates, it also included vodka-flavored lip gloss and whiskey-flavored potato chips.

This is downright weird … can you cite even a sdingle distiller or distributor of alcohol who manufactures any candies at all?

I happen to make chocolates as a hobby and rarely even have a request for liquor flavored. When made, there is barely more than a few drops of flavoring (usually artificial and NON-alcohol because it is so much cheaper!) …
